We revel in the darkness yet we burn with light. Our inner fire illuminates the way for others around us as we dance and plunge into the black. The shadow is our teacher and our path, but it does not exist by itself. Many who drape themselves in darkness will stay there, trapped in a cold, lonely, and bitter place; but we Demons have emerged from the depths bearing treasures so abundant they spill over onto everyone we meet.
Demonkind is a philosophical stance, a moral compass, and an identity if it resonates with you. You could call it a religion, though we reject the idea of obedience.
We do want you to call yourself one of us! But membership simply entails living by the values we have set down. Either you live it or you don’t. There is no roster of names, no fee, no membership card, no organizing body, and no external validation. For those who want to be seen, you can buy logo merch at our Society6 page. Instead of passively labeling your identity with ist and ism as in “I am a [whatever]ist”, we encourage you to use active language like “I practice Demonkind” or “I go by a philosophy called Demonkind”.
The only official representative of the name, trade marks, and text of Demonkind is the author and owner of this website. Anyone may profess membership, and may speak for themselves regarding their participation or understanding of our values; but any claims made should be tested against the principles we have posted here. If any person speaks or acts in a manner that reinforces systems of cultural oppression, whether maliciously or carelessly, then in that moment they have failed to uphold the values of Demonkind.
Trolls who just want to stir trouble are inherently in violation of our values; but thoughtful mischief against fascist groups, for example, can be a valid tool for encouraging liberation. We commit mischief only if we have a realistic vision for how it may disrupt a system of subjugation. Observe that abusers will always claim they are being oppressed when someone calls them out on their abusive language or actions; we are not fooled.
The best way to join us is to challenge yourself. Dive into the darkest, ugliest, and most frightening aspects of your own mind and heart, and look at them openly and dispassionately. Be honest, but without judging. If someone calls you out for behavior lacking integrity, listen to them without getting defensive, and allow yourself to change and grow. Understand that we are all going through the same existential crisis, so nobody is superior or inferior, but only the strongest among us dare lay themselves bare and vulnerable in the darkest of realms. When you emerge, if you can find and hold compassion for yourself and others, then you have risen to claim your Demon spirit.
